NS4773 : The line of the Antonine Wall

taken 6 years ago, near to Old Kilpatrick, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

The line of the Antonine Wall
The line of the Antonine Wall
If nothing else, this picture will serve to show that there is little visible trace of either the Antonine Wall or its ditch in this area. However, its course, as shown on the map, recedes directly from the photographer's position, in the right-hand half of the image.

The point from which the picture was taken is the end of the hedge that appears on the right in NS4773 : View from path. From this point, the Wall runs in almost a straight line to the point shown in NS4773 : End of path to Old Kilpatrick. The path I was following on the day takes a less direct route, around the southern edge of the field.

Although there is little to be seen on the ground, the course of the Wall has been determined in this area by means of excavation; see NS4873 : Carleith farm track for the relevant link.

As in NS4773 : View from path, the Erskine Bridge can be seen on the left.
