The hard, but sandy surface of this path near Virginia Water lake indicates the dry heathland across which it runs.
Virginia Water (lake and park) :: SU9768
The body of water called Virginia Water in Surrey later gave its name to a nearby town. It is an artificial lake, in the south-eastern corner of Windsor Great Park, originally made for William, Duke of Cumberland, in 1748-1752 by Henry Flitcroft.

The original dam broke in 1768 causing a serious flood, and was rebuilt c 250m further east in the 1780s when George III increased the area of the lake to its present size, employing Thomas Sandby who designed and constructed the rockwork cascade at the southern end of the dam, inaugurated in 1797.

The park around the lake, statutorily listed grade I, is open to the public without charge during daylight hours and contains several "sights" such as a totem pole, boathouse, ornamental bridges and Roman ruins.
