Erected by Fergus, King of Galloway, 'to the glory of God' in 1142AD. It was colonised soon after by Cistercian monks from Rievaulx (Yorks) . Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night in Scotland here in May 1568, following the fateful Battle of Langside. And from here next day she took a boat to England, into nineteen years of incarceration and ultimately execution.
