At 1750'asl, Fealar Lodge has the reputation of being one of the highest and loneliest habitations in the whole of Scotland. However H.V.Morton ('In Scotland Again', Methuen 1933) tells a tale that puts that view into a namby-pamby context!
"In the August of 1822 Lord Kennedy, who had been shooting, made a bet of 2000 guineas that he would shoot forty brace of grouse in twenty-four hours and afterwards ride his horse 140 miles to Dunottar and back. And he won the bet! He began his shoot at a quarter past four in the morning, bagged his forty brace by nine a.m., mounted his horse and reached Dunottar by two p.m. Seventy miles in a little over four hours! He then rested for an hour and rode the seventy miles back to Falar (sic), where he arrived at about eight p.m. I think he earned his 2000 guineas."
