The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas - memorial to J Collingwood Bruce
Bruce was the great interpreter of Hadrian’s Wall in the second half of the 19th C. He was born in 1805, and after graduating from Glasgow University, became a schoolmaster and Presbyterian Minister in Newcastle. The first edition of what became his “Handbook to the Roman Wall was published in 1863. Since Collingwood’s death in 1892, the book has been continuously updated.
