Ticket barriers, Marylebone Underground station
This is the only entrance to the Underground in Marylebone station as far as I know, and Marylebone is on only one line, the Bakerloo, so the sign makes up in size for its sole status.

Few typefaces have become so pervasively part of the landscape as London Underground's 'Johnston'. This is it in bold style. 'Johnston Sans' was designed for the Underground by the artist calligrapher Edward Johnston following a commission in 1915 by Frank Pick, LU's commercial manager. Pick also commissioned the famous colour-coded diagrammatic map of the network. The first public appearance of 'Johnston' was for posters in 1916. It was used thenceforth for all print and signage for the Underground, creating a corporate identity that could be recognised throughout the capital and its suburbs. Its sensitive update for the digital age 'New Johnston', designed by Eiichi Kono 1979-80, fulfils that function for Transport for London.

"Johnston's Underground lettering is often considered the first modern sans", preceding (and possibly inspiring) Futura, Gill Sans and others, even influencing the much more recent Verdana, a currently pervasive type design. All this and more from the absorbing 'Just my Type' by Simon Garfield, Profile Books 2010, ISBN 978-1846683015
