The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas - the Maddison Monument
The Maddison Monument is a painted marble monument to three generations of a merchant adventurer family whose members were prominent in the civic life of the time. It was erected in memory of Henry Maddison who died in 1634, and of his wife Elizabeth - the two large figures in the centre, kneeling at a prayer desk - see NZ2464 : The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas - the Maddison Monument (2). Henry is shown in the habit of an alderman of Newcastle. Beneath them are the figures of their ten sons and six daughters. On the left are the kneeling figures of Henry’s father , Lionel, and his wife. Lionel was knighted by Charles I, but later deserted the royal cause.
The monument is of the same period and style as NZ2464 : The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas - St. George's Chapel - the Hall monument. {Source: Cathedral leaflet.}
