NO6865 : Thornton Aisle

taken 10 years ago, near to Marykirk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Thornton Aisle
Thornton Aisle
Two of the side aisles of the old kirk are all that survive. The building right of centre is the Thornton Aisle, which contains memorials to the family who owned the land until it passed to the Strachans in 1309. It was returned to the Thorntons in 1893 by Sir Thomas Thornton, who was Town Clerk of Dundee. It had become ruinous but has been restored. See NO6865 : Old Mary Kirk.

A fragment of masonry on the left, partly hidden by gravestones, is the Barclay Vault.
