Crookston Castle: spiral staircase
Crookston Castle: spiral staircase
From the Great Hall (NS5262 : Crookston Castle: the Great Hall), the spiral staircase gives access to the Lord's Bedchamber (NS5262 : Crookston Castle: the Lord's Bedchamber).

Beside the same staircase are the remains of a medieval latrine, and a blocked door to the (now largely demolished) south-eastern tower (see NS5262 : Crookston Castle, where the remains of that tower are on the left). Further up, the staircase is blocked, but it would have given access to the uppermost rooms in the north-eastern tower (i.e., the two storeys of rooms directly above the Lord's Bedchamber). Those rooms are now reached, instead, by sets of modern metal rungs.
Crookston Castle
This castle was built in the fifteenth century by the Stewarts of Darnley; the site had earlier been occupied by a late-twelfth century timber castle built by Robert de Croc, after whom the Crookston area is named. See LinkExternal link (at WoSAS) for detailed information.
