SS1244 : Old Battery down below - Lundy Island

taken 26 years ago, near to Lundy, Devon, England

Old Battery down below - Lundy Island
Old Battery down below - Lundy Island
Down below on Lundy's west coast, this is the Old Battery. When fog descended, the two cannons here were fired at 10-minute intervals as a warning to shipping. Two families were accommodated in the cottage here. This Geographer has experienced a Lundy fog which lasted from Monday lunchtime and finally cleared away on the following Wednesday night - Thursday dawned bright and clear with crystal clear views for many miles. The height above sea level shows the necessity for the Old Battery cannons and the redundancy of the Old Light when fog descended. Time photo taken not available.
