The St Cuthbert Window (s.VII), York Minster
Dating from around 1440 this huge window is almost impossible to photograph. It consists of over 20 layers of panels. Given by Thomas Langley, Dean of York (1401-6) and Bishop of Durham (1406-37) and has been restored in the 19th and 20th Centuries. It complements the St William window opposite. It is thought that the large size was to throw more light on the High Altar.
The subjects are too numerous to list, but include many Archbishops and Bishops and scenes from the life and legends of St Cuthbert, with members of the House of Lancaster (to whom Langley owed allegiance). Langley was eventually made a Cardinal.
