NY4961 : St Kentigern church, Irthington

taken 11 years ago, near to Irthington, Cumbria, England

St Kentigern church, Irthington
St Kentigern church, Irthington
Aligned ENE to WSW rather than the traditional E to W.
Dates from Norman times, but was restored in 1849-53 by Bloxham in the gothic tradition.
The clock tower was added in 1897.
The stone work on the chancel appears far older than the rest of the church.
It probably contains several reused roman stones.
One dark stone just under the central west window caught my eye.
