Campbell of Fairfield Burial Ground
Campbell of Fairfield Burial Ground
This little burial ground was consecrated in 1835, by William Gunning Campbell of Fairfield and his wife Diana Ingilby, in record of the severest trial of their lives, the tragic death of their only son. The inscription reads:
Sacred
TO THE MEMORY OF
WILLIAM INGILBY CAMPBELL.
YOUNGER OF FAIRFIELD.
LATE LIEUT. IN 6TH DRAGOON GUARDS
AGED 22 YEARS.
HE FELL OVERBOARD, WHILE COMING
FROM NEWCASTLE TO EDINBURGH
IN THE ARDINCAPLE STEAMBOAT
IN SIGHT OF HIS MOTHER WHO
WAS SEPARATED BY THIS SAD CALAMITY
FROM HER ONLY CHILD
ON MONDAY 29TH JUNE 1835.
He that believeth in me, though he were
dead yet shall he live.
John XI. 25

The graveyard was in need of some care and attention when this photo as taken. Fairfield House is now a high-class hotel.
