TQ9377 : Wreck of the Richard Montgomery

Wreck of the Richard Montgomery
Wreck of the Richard Montgomery
This is a scan of a picture I took years ago from a ferry coming into Sheerness.
The Richard Montgomery sank in 1944 after dragging its anchor and running aground.
It was carrying a large quantity of bombs and explosives, and a lot of this has never been removed and is lying in the wreck in an uncertain condition.
Nobody seems to know whether it is rusting away harmlessly or corroding into an unstable chemical mess that could go off any day.
There is loads of stuff on the web about it, with opinions varying from "we are keeping an eye on it" to "It's going to be the end of Sheerness as we know it"
Here is a video off TV's "Coast" with Neil Oliver LinkExternal link
Wiki. has lots about it LinkExternal link including this Geograph of the marker buoy TQ9377 : Wreck of the Richard Montgomery (to left of buoy)
This position should be accurate using the handy latitude-longitude to NGR converter.
I'm afraid the date is very approximate.
