Redbridge Viaduct
The Redbridge Viaduct over the River Tweed dates back to 1849 when it was built as part of the so-called "Waverley" line from Edinburgh to Carlisle. The line was closed in 1969 but now, under the Borders Railway project, is due to be reopened from Edinburgh as far as Tweedbank a short distance east of this viaduct. Construction started in early 2012 and the line is scheduled to be opened for traffic in summer, 2015.
The viaduct carried a tarmac path which carried both the Southern Uplands Way and National Cycle Network route 1. The Southern Uplands Way has been diverted over Galafoot Bridge and along the river bank; it is not clear what alternative provision has been made for cyclists on the National Cycle Route.
