Lambeth Palace, London SE1
The redundant St Mary-in-Lambeth Church at the side of the Lambeth Palace site, base and home of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The tower of this Grade II-listed former parish church dates from 1377, whereas its nave, south porch and north aisle were created in 1851-2 by P.C. Hardwick in C14th style. In 1976 John and Rosemary Nicholson traced the tomb of the two C17th royal gardeners/plant hunters, John and John Tradescant (a father and son) to this churchyard and as a result they were inspired to create the Museum of Garden History. This is the first museum in the world dedicated to the history of gardening. Lambeth Palace was acquired by the archbishopric c.1200 AD. It is bounded by Lambeth Palace Road to the west and Lambeth Road on its south side.
