Grove House, University of Roehampton
Designed by James Wyatt, Grove House was originally built for Sir Joshua Vanneck. The house is on the original site of Roehampton Great House - one of the first to be built in the area. Vanneck also enlarged the lake when he moved into the House with water supplied from an enclosed spring on Putney Common.
Some parts of the original house date back to 1762 and many original features can still be found inside such as fireplaces, wooden panelling and decorative ceilings.
The building is faced in stucco, in imitation of stone, and the circular stone plaque above the entrance is in Coade stone, a composition made to a secret formula for decorative work as a substitute for natural stone. The grand house included a library, billiard room, breakfast parlour, a large drawing room hung with tapestry, a conservatory and aviary.
The formal gardens, lily pond and limestone terrace were added in the 19th century.
In 1912, the house was sold to Charles Louis Fischer, an American merchant based in London. He carried out extensive alternations to the house adding a new billiard room (now the Panelled Room) and a new dining room (now the Portrait Room). He altered the upper floors, added the outdoor Terrace area and encased the whole of the north front of the house in stone.
In August 1921, the Grove House site was purchased on behalf of the Froebel Educational Institute. The house sits within the grounds of Froebel College which is part of the University of Roehampton.
The Grade II listed Georgian mansion house is surrounded by acres of landscaped grounds and gardens overlooking a lake and lily pond.
