In March 1989 an attempt was made to blow up the Craigmore viaduct. The northbound Enterprise train from Dublin was about to leave Newry Station some four minute distance away from the viaduct when the bomb went off. The line was closed for a week for clearance and repair operations.

This 18 arch bridge was constructed by the Belfast and Dublin Junction Railway between 1845 and 1852 to a design by J.B.Macneill. The viaduct is built from granodiorites of the Newry Igneous Complex quarried at Goraghwood a couple of miles to the north along the railway line.
