Smestow Valley Nature Reserve
Much of the woodland in the reserve has developed since the area was acquired from British Rail in the 1970s. The trackbed is now a wide linear walkway from Oxley to near Kingswinford.
The fields were formerly used for agriculture but now support a mixture of grassland and scrub. The site supports more than 50 species of breeding bird and has hosted over 170 bird species in total. These include buzzard, snipe, reed bunting and lesser spotted woodpecker. The site also supports other wildlife including great crested newt, badgers, and Daubenton bats, while otters have been seen around the reserve and in the adjacent canal. In the meadow areas there are many plants including birds foot trefoil, black knapweed and cuckoo flower.
