SP9414 : Pitstone - St Mary's - Encaustic tiles

taken 10 years ago, near to Pitstone, Buckinghamshire, England

Pitstone - St Mary's - Encaustic tiles
These C14th encaustic floor tiles are in the eastern end of the chancel beneath and around the altar. The tiles were made in Penn at the tilery there which produced thousands of tiles in the C13th and C14th. A fair number of these tiles remain dotted around Britain, but the collection in situ at Pitstone is particularly good and important.
See SU8403 : Fourteenth century encaustic tiles for a bit more information on encaustic tiles.
