The Windermere Ferry forms part of the B5285 road and crosses the lake at about its midpoint, from Ferry Nab in Bowness-on-Windermere to Far Sawrey. The ferry takes people, vehicles, horses and cycles across the lake, reducing traffic on the surrounding narrow roads and easing congestion and pollution. It also links the busy eastern shore of the lake and the peaceful countryside between Windermere and Coniston on the west. If the ferry is not operating, the alternative is a road journey of approximately 15 miles (24 km) around either the head or foot of the lake.

Records show that a ferry was operating here as far back as 1438. The original craft were rowed across the lake, later ferries were steam driven and the most recent ones have had diesel engines. The current ferry 'Mallard' was built in 1990 and is the largest so far; a modern craft which carries up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers. It is an example of a chain ferry LinkExternal link which is guided across the lake on a wire hawser.

Today the ferry is owned by Cumbria County Council and operates all year, with services every 20 minutes from early morning to mid-evening. A toll is charged (LinkExternal link Cumbria County Council - Windermere Ferry).
Windermere :: SD3997

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the end of the last ice age some 13000 years ago.

The lake is largely surrounded by foothills of the Lake District which provide pleasant low-level walks; to the north and north-east are the higher fells of central Lakeland. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847.
