Windermere, Hen Holme and Lady Holme
Windermere, Hen Holme and Lady Holme
Windermere contains eighteen islands. The largest is Belle Isle, all of the others are called 'Holmes' after the local word for ‘island’, which originates from the old Norse language. Hen Holme on the left, is used as a starting point for yacht races in the summer.

The island to the right of Hen Holme is Lady Holme. Also known as St Mary Holme, it is named after the chapel that used to exist on the island. There is a story that hundreds of years ago a couple of priests or monks were installed on the island by the local lord of the manor to pray for his family. They had a couple of boats, were allowed ten fishing nets and kept hens on nearby Hen Holme, hence its name! There's also a story that they looked after people with leprosy and they were kept on Hen Holme too LinkExternal link .

Almost directly behind Lady Holme in this photograph, is the island of Rough Holme.
Windermere

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the end of the last ice age some 13000 years ago.

The lake is largely surrounded by foothills of the Lake District which provide pleasant low-level walks; to the north and north-east are the higher fells of central Lakeland. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847.
