"SS Castle", Guibal Fan House, Lazenby Bank
In the woods on Lazenby Bank, close to the track of the disused mineral rail line is this amazing structure. It was built in 1876 and housed the fan to draw fresh air through the mines, the fan inside was 30 feet in diameter by 10 feet wide. It is known locally as SS Castle due to the S shaped braces on the structure and its castle like appearance. On the right hand side of the building the cover of the ventilation drift is just visible. Access to this is by a steel door behind the building which was open on the day of our visit. Inside the large shaft could be seen to be descending into the hillside until it met what appeared to be water.
