Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Aberbargoed Grasslands
The topside of the wings of the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary is very similar in appearance to the Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
Without seeing the underside of the wings I have assumed that this is a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary as that is more likely in this habitat of damp grassland.
Aberbargoed Grasslands was declared a National Nature Reserve in June 2012.
The reserve is on a southwest-facing slope above the Rhymney Valley and is an area of semi-natural lowland grasslands of various types.
It hosts an population of the rare Marsh Fritillary butterfly.
