Compare with Alan Heardman's SK1273 : Chee Tor Tunnel, taken in 2008 before the tunnel was reopened to walkers and cyclists.
These tunnels (Chee Tor no. 2 is just the other end of this one) were opened in May 1863 as part of the Midland Railway's line between Manchester and London. The line closed just over a hundred years later, a victim of Beeching's axe. The route was purchased in 1981 by the Peak District National Park Authority, who opened the Monsal Trail along part of its route. Chee Tor Tunnel was opened for pedestrians and cyclists in 2011. There's more information, and some pictures of the tunnels in use by trains, at the excellent "Forgotten Relics of an Enterprising Age" website at LinkExternal link
