St Mary's church, Northiam :: TQ8224

Grade II*listed

The church is first mentioned in the 11th century, although it is almost certain there was earlier church on this spot. The church was granted by Robert of Eu to Saint Mary in the Castle at Hastings.
The base of the tower is Norman and is the upper part 13th century with a 15th century stone spire.
The church has nave with north and south arcades, tower with octagonal spire, north and south chapels and the Frewen Mausoleum.
The spire is one of only four mediaeval ones in the County, and also the tallest. The spire was heightened by 10 feet in 1860. The whole building was restored and enlarged in the 1830s, the chancel was rebuilt, although the sandstone used has weathered badly.
The chancel is continuous with the nave, there is no chancel arch, the original was removed. The original 12th century nave was sizeable, and was originally without aisles, these were added around 1300. The piers are round with double chamfered arches.
There are several mounted brass inscriptions including one to John Sharpe and Nicholas Tufton from the 16th century. Apparently there are two figures on the chancel floor, but they are not easily seen.
To the north of the church is the Frewen mausoleum, which originally had no communication with the church. This was built in 1846 and converted to a Chapel in 1978. The mausoleum contains several monuments to the Frewen family including a fine monument to Anne Frewen.
There is a north window with coats of arms of the various members of the Frewen family. Outside, there are shields and gargoyles, although of course these are Victorian.
