SE8211 : Vazon sliding railway bridge

Vazon sliding railway bridge
Vazon sliding railway bridge
This unique bridge was rebuilt in 2004 and carries a busy railway line over the Stainforth & Keadby Canal. The bridge is opened by being slid to the right along the clearly seen rails using wire ropes operated by motors in the grey shed on the right. If the bridge itself wasn't amazing enough, there is a footpath that crosses it and allows one some interesting views of the set up. Sadly, I didn't get to see it open.

In the background is the currently mothballed Keadby gas-fired combined cycle gas turbine power station that was one of those built as part of the 'dash for gas' when the electricity industry was privatised. The former CEGB had big new coal burning stations in an advanced state of planning and with 900 MW turbines but these were binned in favour of the relatively less capital intensive CCGT plants. (Rant over!)
