NS3879 : Rust fungus on rose bud

taken 12 years ago, near to Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Rust fungus on rose bud
Rust fungus on rose bud
The rose plant is growing beside a path from Millburn to Overton Road; the path is shown, in another season, in NS3879 : Path to Vale of Leven Cemetery. The orange mass erupting through the base of the flower bud is a fungus of the genus Phragmidium. For the complex life-cycle of the rust fungi, see NS3679 : Gall on nettle.
