Course of old railway at Rymes Place Farm
Course of old railway at Rymes Place Farm
Taken from the bridge which carried the old alignment of the Newent road over the former railway. It's quite a struggle to get up here in the summer ... you have to battle through thistles and brambles and all sorts of hostile plants.
Here you can see not only the course of the railway line, which went roughly where the low trees are in the centre of the shot, but also the course of the canal upon which the railway was built. Canals can twist and turn as they like, but railways need long sweeping curves, so when the Great Western converted the southern half of the Hereford & Gloucester canal to a railway line, they cut off a lot of the old canal's meanderings. The taller trees to the right of this shot mark one such canal remnant.
