Hylton Castle, Hylton Dene
Hylton Castle, Hylton Dene
The distinctive and highly decorative gatehouse-tower of a castle built by the wealthy Sir William Hylton, in the late 14th century, replacing an 11th century wooden castle built shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066

Today, the remains of the castle are owned by English Heritage. The surrounding parkland (Hylton Dene) is maintained by a community organisation. The castle and its chapel are protected as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument (English Heritage Building ID: 391434 LinkExternal link British Listed Buildings).
