The grave site seemed to call for some small ceremony, both to celebrate success in finding it in the featureless landscape, and in honour of its ancient eminence.

The name in English, grave of the water monster, links it to the mythical lake-dwelling afanc of the Mabinogion, a huge beaverlike creature that had to be dragged from a lake by oxen. It's not hard to see how the protruding stones along the length of the grave could resemble a huge emerging skeleton.
