TQ2353 : Coal Tax post on Walton Heath
taken 9 years ago, near to Walton on The Hill, Surrey, England

Coal Tax post on Walton Heath
There are 211 Coal Tax posts still in existence and a remarkable 12 of these can be seen on the two mile walk from Dorking Road along the bridleway which follows the western edge of the wooded Banstead Heath, then continues across Walton Heath Golf Course and over the M25 to reach the North Downs Way and Colley Hill. I counted nine of these to the north of the M25 and three to the south.
Many are in very poor condition with their paint peeling if they still have their original red and black crest like this one does. More than half though have been painted completely white, including over the crest. In view of their isolated and hard to find locations it is not really surprising that these ones are so neglected.
This is the sixth one I came to but Ian Capper spotted a 13th one which I missed and gives useful information and links - see Link
