Photos TF3287 : The Horse Steps, Aswell Street and TF3287 : The entry to Aswell Spring show the Horse Steps as they were two years ago in 2012.
They had been built to allow horses use the steps in the centre whilst allowing the wheels of the carts to follow the continuous slope at the sides.
At the bottom is "Aswell Hole", once a pool/ford containing water from the Aswell Spring. This led into a street of what became dingy and disreputable houses, several of which became brothels. The "Night Soil Men" came weekly, late at night, to empty the privies. I believe this still happens, more frequently in slums and "homesteads" in the third world. The houses were demolished under the "Slum Clearance Order" in 1958.
The area has been much improved recently by the "Gatherums and Springside Regeneration Group". The final part of the project entailed the revamping of Aswell Hole and the Horse Steps.
