Pier ahead-Hythe, Southampton, Hants
The Hythe Ferry, Great Expectations, approaches Hythe Pier at the end of its journey from Southampton. Building of the pier started in 1879 and the pier was opened in 1881 and a narrow (2 ft) gauge railway was added in 1909 after trucks used for transport were found to be damaging the planking. The pier, train and ferry are operated by White Horse Ferries of Swindon. A ferry between Southampton and Hythe is first mentioned in the Middle Ages. Time taken 5.11 pm BST (British Summer Time).
