St Mary's Church, Abstrupus Danby Monument
St Mary's Church, Abstrupus Danby Monument
The eastern window of the south aisle is completely blocked up by the fine, 18th century monument commemorating Sir Abstrupus Danby, Lord of Mashamshire, who died in 1727. The monument was erected by his son, also called Abstrupus, ten years after his father's death. It is mostly made of Carrara marble with some backing slabs of black polished limestone. The artist is unknown (Church guide book).
St Mary's Church, Masham
The earliest documented evidence of a church in Masham is in the Domesday Book of 1086 but the only survival from the Anglo-Saxon period is the base of a much weathered, ninth century round-shafted cross.

The present church is of later and varied dates. The oldest part of the church is the tower, the lower stage of which is of the mid-12th century and its upper stages date from the 13th century. The body of the church underwent considerable rebuilding in the 14th century and the porch was added in the 16th century.

The whole church underwent restoration, and in parts extensive remodelling in the Victorian period after a lightning strike in 1855. The exterior of the building, therefore, has the appearance of a nineteenth century church.

The church is a grade II* listed building (English Heritage Building ID: 325034 LinkExternal link British Listed Buildings)
