The Witches' Ring
The Witches' Ring
At the centre of the picture is a feature that is known locally as The Witches' Ring (or, alternatively, as the Viking Burial Mound).

It was excavated in 2013 as part of the Hidden Heritage Project, and is near a building that present-day OS mapping calls Stuckiedhu, but which appears as Stuckdhu on older maps. After the excavation, the purpose of the enclosure remained unclear, though it was noted that its surrounding bank appeared to be designed to keep livestock out rather than in. One of the suggestions that has been offered is that it was an element of a designed landscape dating from the eighteenth or nineteenth century.

The present view is from the roadside at the former Ballyhennan Church (now a restaurant), whose associated burial ground Link has many interesting old memorials. I had been at the Witches' Ring itself about ten minutes earlier (NN3104 : The top of the Witches' Ring), but found that, on account of the tall vegetation, it was more effectively depicted in photographs taken from a greater distance.
