The rocks forming strata exposed on the skyline are Ordovician (Arenig) sandstones which contrast strongly with underlying siltstones and mudstones of the Nant y Big Formation, which is of Cambrian (St. David's) age. That there is an unconformity here is not obvious in this view, but further to the East, the Nant-y Big Formation is overlain by the Cambrian Maentwrog Formation, showing that there is significant overstep by the Ordovician strata. See SH3124 : Intra-Cambrian unconformity for this relationship. The mudstones are easily shattered by frost and prone to landslips, which in turn undermine the overlying sandstones.
