An unrecognizable stone figure, that had decayed over hundreds of years, has been replaced, but with no records to identify it, archaeologists, historians, academics and clergy spent months researching the figure, and finally agreed on St Peter, which is the formal title of the Minster, ‘ The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York’.
Now completed and in place, the full size seated figure of St Peter will look out over the city from the pinnacle of the Great East Window. However, with scaffolding due to remain in place around the East End until the window is re-installed in 2016, it will remain largely under wraps until then.
The BBC screened ‘The Minster’, a documentary which covered the statue from its conception to its placement, first shown in May 2014.
When SE6052 : York. located at SE603520 is moved to this square, the story is that "Mad Alice" was hanged here in 1825, apparently only guilty of being 'mad'. The ghost of Alice reputedly drifts along the lane which once was named after her and features in the city's ghost tour industry.
