Hornsby-Akroyd Engine at Speke Hall Home Farm
The engine shed at Speke Hall Home Farm was built at the same time as the hall to house a steam engine that was never installed. A 12½ horsepower Hornsby-Akroyd diesel engine was installed in 1894; it was one of thousands to be sold throughout the world. The engine would have provided power to the farm machinery, by driving a shaft that went under the path outside and into the main farm buildings. The engine was also connected to a saw bench in the room behind, mainly used for cutting fence posts for the Speke estate.

The Hornsby –Akroyd engine was removed and replaced by a petrol engine during the 1920s. This engine was in turn replaced by an electric motor when electricity was installed at Speke Hall and Home Farm late in the 1930s.

Restoration of the Home Farm engine shed began in 1999; although the engine had long since been removed, everything else including foundations, cooling water tank, exhaust and silencer remained. This Hornsby-Akroyd engine was transported to Speke Hall in 2001.
Speke Hall :: SJ4182

Speke Hall is a wood-framed wattle-and-daub Tudor manor house on the banks of the River Mersey. The first part (The Great Hall) was built in 1530 and it was completed in 1598 when the North Range was added. The hall suffered years of neglect and decay in the 18th century (including a spell when it was used as a cow shed) but was restored and brought back into use in the Victorian period.

Since 1942, the house has been owned by the National Trust and it is open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building (English Heritage Building ID: 359547 LinkExternal link British Listed Buildings)
