William Wallace at Bemersyde
William Wallace at Bemersyde
Inscribed 'Wallace, great patriot hero ill requited chief MDCCCXIV', the statue was carved from one piece of stone by John Smith of Darnick, and commissioned by David Stuart Erskine, the 11th Earl of Buchan. It was unveiled on 22 September 1814, the anniversary of Wallace's victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
Only one cloud on the horizon - a referendum on independence on 18 September 2014.
