Church of the Ascension: foundation or consecration stone
Church of the Ascension: foundation or consecration stone
The purpose of this stone in the wall of the Ascension church, Balham Hill is not quite clear: it is a little too high up in the wall to be a true foundation stone although the date (1883) is seven years before the date quoted for the church's opening. The four crosses suggest that it marks the consecration of the church, but that would have been on completion in 1890, and one would then expect to see the name of the Bishop who performed the consecration. It names the architect, builder, Vicar, Churchwardens and MP. For context, see TQ2874 : Church of the Ascension, Malwood Road.
