Castles of Leinster: Cloghan, Offaly (1)
Cloghan Castle is an inhabited and restored tower house on the Cloghan Demesne SW of Banagher. It was probably built after 1595 when a castle that had stood here since the C14 was destroyed. The main external features are the square bartizans on the NE and SW corners, the former at the height of the wall-walk, the latter at fourth storey level. There is also a machicolation on the east side that covered the former entrance where an early-C19 house now adjoins. Three of the original circular corner flankers of the bawn wall are still extant at the corners, but the square one at the SW corner and the adjoining outbuildings, all date from the C18. In 1620 the castle was held by Sir John MacCoghlan, and later by the Moores in 1641 who were also confirmed as still in possession in 1666.
