NX5153 : Cairnholy I
taken 11 years ago, 4 km ESE of Carsluith, Dumfries And Galloway, Scotland

Cairnholy I and II are two chambered tombs in Kirkdale, about 1.2km from the coast above Wigtown Bay in Galloway. They date from the neolithic farmers who lived here 6000-4000 years ago. These two are similar in design, but Cairnholy I is more elaborate. The chambers of both have an inner and outer compartment. They may have been added to later, and Cairnholy I has a façade and forecourt. When they were excavated in 1949 few bones remained, because of the acid nature of the soil and groundwater, but objects found indicated that the people had contact with others quite some distance away – part of an axe made of jadeite, a stone from the Alps was found.
