Church of the Holy Paraclete

No longer in use for worship and now converted to a private residence, this is one of only two churches in England specifically dedicated to the Paraclete - though that is a synonym for the Holy Spirit or Ghost which is the title of several other churches, notably the cathedral at Guildford. The other example is the Church of the Holy Paraclete at Kirkhaugh in Northumberland in NY6949.

Pevsner in his Herefordshire volume of 1963 (sc. Ross-on-Wye, p.278) tells us that the church was designed by George Frederick Bodley and completed in 1906. "Nave and chancel and bellcote superficially like so many others, but in fact remarkably personal." Tall octagonal piers along the centre of the building divide it into two naves, yet with a single wagon roof over the whole. At the east end a tall chimney rose from a corner of the vestry and a central buttress reinforced the blind east wall. All the windows, including the blank ones, have triangular heads.
