NS3322 : Berthing the Waverley at Ayr

taken 10 years ago, near to Wallacetown, South Ayrshire, Scotland

Berthing the Waverley at Ayr
Berthing the Waverley at Ayr
Low tide berthing at Ayr Harbour for the paddle steamer “Waverley” involves a complicated manoeuvre with the ship’s lifeboat. After entering the coal basin on the north side, the steamer has to make a 3-point turn for berthing on the south side of the harbour, ready for the next sailing. If this proves to be impossible, the ship’s lifeboat carries 2 ropes to the south side from where the steamer hauls itself across the harbour.
