Dunure View
Dunure village and the old castle viewed from the PS "Waverley". Dunure was the first castle built by the local ruling family, the Kennedys, in the 13th century. The most famous event was the torture of the Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey by Gilbert Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis, in 1565. The Commendator was roasted alive on an open fire in the vault of Dunure Castle to secure rich lands belonging to the church. The Commendator was rescued by the rival Kennedy laird from Bargany, and the lands were restored. (Source: "The Castles Of South-West Scotland", by Mike Salter)
