Karl Marx's grave - the original
On a rather overgrown and muddy side-path, a little distance from the well known and well photographed memorial, lies Karl Marx's original grave. He was interred here, in his wife's grave, with little ceremony in March 1883.
In 1954, after a fundraising campaign by the Communist Party, both bodies were exhumed and moved to a more prominent position near one of the main paths. The impressive marble plinth with its heavy bronze bust TQ2886 : Karl Marx' Grave, Highgate Cemetery (East) was erected two years later.
It appears to be the only grave in Highgate Cemetery to have attracted donations - to pay for repairs - or an ironic gesture by local capitalists?
