St Paul’s Church and remains of Monastery, Jarrow
St Paul’s has been a place of Christian worship for over 1300 years. The monastery site was one of Europe’s most influential centres of learning in the 7th and 8th centuries. It was the home of the Venerable Bede, a priest, monk, and scholar of Jarrow. He came here as a boy from St Peter’s, a sister site, and is now buried in the Galilee chapel in Durham cathedral.
