The Ruddy Duck, Peakirk
A Grade II listed building, The Ruddy Duck on St. Pega's Road was originally built as a row of cottages in the late 17th. century. The pub was formerly known as The Black Bull but, after the Peakirk Wildfowl Trust opened in 1957, it was renamed after a species of North American duck (oxyura jamaicensis).
The Wildfowl Trust was founded by the naturalist Sir Peter Scott (1909-1989), the son of the Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott. It was reputedly Sir Peter himself who persuaded The Black Bull's landlord at the time to change the pub's name. Once a popular local visitor attraction, the Wildfowl Trust was renamed the Peakirk Waterfowl Gardens in 1991 but sadly closed in 2001.
The village cross, which was erected in 1904, can just be seen in the background.
