Sailing-barge 'Marjorie' tacking across the Swale
A distant shot, taken from Shellness beach some 9 minutes after the vessel had passed close to the spit: TR0567 : Sailing-barge 'Marjorie' competing in the 2014 Swale Match This was the day of the Kentish Sail Association's 2014 Swale Match, and - some six hours into the race - Marjorie was the second barge to head back into the Swale and toward the finishing line.
The starting (and finishing) line for the barge match is off Faversham Creek. The course takes the boats around a series of marker buoys in Whitstable Bay before they head back into the Swale. The slower barges started at 6am. Marjorie, sailing in the bowsprit class, started at 6.15, and completed the course in 6 hours 26 minutes, to finish second, 23 minutes behind the winner, 'Edme'.
